Program
Over this weekend you will learn the ‘road-map’ to the abdominal scan. Areas covered will include ultrasonography of the normal abdominal organs, including the liver, spleen, gastrointestinal, reproductive and urinary tracts. The most useful ultrasonographic measurements needed in assessments and clinical diagnosis and some common pathological conditions will also be considered.
Delegates will also gain a practical understanding of the physics of ultrasound, ultrasound machine set up and how to choose an ultrasound machine for their own practice. Medical Plus provides technical support and advice on the day.
Both days include practical ‘hands-on’ scanning, accompanying notes and resources and the opportunity to liaise closely with the internal medicine and imaging specialists involved.

Ideally this course can lead into Next Steps in Ultrasound, which is the second weekend of our Small Animal Ultrasonography Fast-Track Course offerings. No prior experience and skills in scanning are required for this beginners Fast-Track.

This workshop is designed for veterinarians who are new to abdominal ultrasound or have limited previous scanning experience. It focuses on the fundamental skills and common abdominal views most relevant to general practice and allows you to build a repeatable ‘roadmap’ for all your abdominal scans.
Yes. The workshop is specifically designed for beginners and introduces your needs to know theoretical components for abdominal ultrasound scanning plus the equipment and fundamental abdominal scanning techniques. No previous ultrasound experience is required.
Places are limited to a maximum of 15 – 18 participants. This helps provide meaningful hands-on scanning time, educator and tutor guidance and opportunities to ask questions throughout the weekend. It is a small, friendly group environment, where questions and discussion are actively encouraged.
The workshop runs from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on both days. Each morning includes two 90-minute theory sessions. This is followed by two 90-minute practical sessions in the afternoon, where you will scan in group of 3 per scan station. There is a break for morning and afternoon tea and also lunch. Many delegates choose to continue scanning through the optional afternoon break, to maximise hands-on time.
Practical sessions use the University of Qld’s teaching dogs. These are greyhounds who are used for student teaching, in the Universities undergraduate program. These lovely animals are in a rehoming program and strict ethic approvals are in place. Under supervision, you’ll practice the common ultrasound views and develop techniques relevant to everyday general practice.
The workshop is held at The University of Queensland’s School of Veterinary Science at the Gatton campus, a dedicated setting for veterinary education and practical training.

Bring a notepad, laptop or tablet if required. Wear comfortable clothing suitable for scanning and handling animals, closed-in shoes and your own scrubs or scrub top.
No – photography and videography are not possible due to privacy constraints.
Yes. You’ll receive printed workshop notes, that will be useful in the morning theory sessions. The afternoon session is dedicated to hands-on scanning time. Post-workshop you will have online access to the notes and presentation slides.
Accommodation, transport and travel costs are not included. Delegates arrange their own travel and accommodation. Improve provides accommodation recommendations and an optional WhatsApp group for sharing travel, social catch up and accommodation information.

The workshop provides 12 CPD hours, or 18 hours for veterinarians registered in NSW. If you are claiming CPD outside Australia, check the requirements with your local registration authority.
No. The Introduction to Abdominal Ultrasound & Echocardiography workshops are not RACE accredited.
Your certificate will be available to download from the online learning platform within one week of completing the workshop.
